I hate it when people dont want to rent us a home when we have pitbulls, not all pitbulls are vicious!!!! We have 2 pit bulls and they are the most loving and caring dogs. It all depends on how to raise them. But just like any other dogs its all on the trainer. So, Please stop sterotyping these poor animals. It has been hard for us to find places to live due to their breed. However, I’d rathar not rent any homes for ignorant people that sterotype….

HI Steph, Check with your insurance company first and foremost. That’s the main reason I don’t allow those dogs (liability.)

I will be new to the landlord game shortly as I am planning on renting out a single family home I have. I plan on being very pet-friendly with applicable pet security deposits of course. As an animal cruelty Investigator I work with all breeds of dogs including bully breeds such as AmStaffs and Pits and throughout my years of experience I find them to be wonderful dogs. Since I don’t plan on discriminating based on breed for my rental property, could someone please tell me what are the negatives to having a tenant with a so-called “pit bull” (beyond the mis-informed media hype, of course)? I assume homeowner’s insurance is part of it, but I’m not sure how far that factors into it. wouldn’t the tenant have to purchase their own separate insurance? Any help you can offer would be great. Thanks!

It makes me smile every time another person buys into the hype. Thats the reason I own two pits. Yeah I never mow the yard around my dogs, I don’t want to get eaten!!!! Read some more headlines kids. This breed is no more dangerous than any other dog. Guess what dog send the most people the the ER every year??? Labradors, wonder when the papers will pick that up? Look at the big picture everyone

Umm, did you read the post? I said that they LOOK close enough to be called Pit Bulls and hence I am likely to get the bad end of the stick on this one.

I agree with Hoodie. Am Staffs are NOT pit bulls. Oh, they’re related? ALL dogs are related in some way or another. And if a mixed breed even resembles a pit bull, they are denied. How is that even right? What a bunch of garbage. No different than the bigots that judged other human races.

It’s really a shame people insist on not getting to know these great dogs before they start assuming they are bad. Considering there are hundreds or thousands of pit bulls living in this country, possibly close to a million, there really aren’t THAT many pit bull attacks happening. There are only an average of five pit bull attacks per year (compared to the over 100,000 dog attacks reported per year). This is stating that an average 99,995 of those attacks are NOT pit bulls. It’s crazy then how pit bulls are seen as monsters when there are so many families spending 15-20 years with a pit bull who passes away never showing any aggression to them. I’m a proud owner of an american staffordshire, which is an akc show bred pit bull. They are not bred for fighting since the 1930′s. Even a pit bull bred for dogfighting would not show human aggression, as humans take part in the unfortunate event of a dog fight. Of course, this depends on the dog (like any breed) like the poster above me stated. As for attacking someone mowing their lawn, they are more likely to attack the lawnmower to protect the human the object is ‘attacking’. I can do anything to my dog, he sleeps in my arms at night. He will not bite anyone. My late pit bull died at 18 years old, never bit anyone. I worked with pit bulls for over 5 years, hundreds within pit bull rescue. Got nothing but love, kisses, and tail wags from even the most abused pit bulls. They are willing to forgive after being abused, please don’t judge them by the few that attacked someone. It wasn’t them.

…ok so I’ll let you take on the insurance industry and persuade them. I have no beef with the breed of dog. It’s just the way the insurance industry works.

And worse case scenario; I’m the one who takes the hit.

Until you get THAT job done…no American Staffordshire Terriers on my property….period.

ahh excuse me, but i think i speak for all pitty and animal lovers here, BUT American Pit Bulls and American Staffy’s are TWO different breeds, they may look alike, but they are NOT, i repeat ARE NOT the same breed.

and Pit Bulls are not dangerous dogs, they only are if they are taught to be, so don’t blame the dogs, it’s the ones who teach them. you think they were born dangeous and then the first moment they start to walk they wanna kill..NO!! any breed of dog can kill if it’s taught to. hell i’ve got two Pit Bulls and they are the most best breed of dogs you could own, very loyal and loving, i wouldn’t trade them for anything.
