Hi Carly,
Asterisk is an open-source (free) software product that runs on most popular operating systems. There is also a version for Windows here http://www.asteriskwin32.com/ .

You may also want to explore Google Voice for screening those calls. Let me know if you need an invite.

Thanks for reading.

Dear Mr. or Ms. Landlord-
You mentioned in another blog post that you use a program called Asterisk. Do you know if there is a freeware version of that for Windows Vista?

I am a college student who was using a credit card through WF to pay for books and other school-related supplies (including the gas to make the 45-minute journey to campus). I use grants to pay for my tuition, but because my family has refused to help me at all with expenses (including cosigning for a loan) and I am under the age of 24 (the age at which I am no longer required to put my parents on my FAFSA, which would mean more grant money available to me and also no cosigner required) I have had to put some tuition on that card, as well, since each student loan place I've applied to has refused me.

I had a job several months ago that allowed me to pay living expenses. With what was left over from my fixed expenses, I would pay the credit card. Usually this amounted to $300 or more, which was ten times my minimum amount due. However, my boss reconfigured the office and completely nixed my position. I have tried to apply for unemployment, but the amount barely covers living expenses, and I had to apply for food stamps as well so I wouldn't starve on ramen noodles. I have gotten behind on the credit card, and now WF won't leave me alone. They've called me more than 50 times during the past week- and literally 20 of those were on Saturday and Sunday.

The thing that bothers me is that the number they've used is the same number from Iowa- their mortgage division in Des Moine, according to Google and WF's website.

I have told them that short of going into prostitution, I won't be able to get the money to pay the bill until I get another job. Period. The guy on the line was extremely rude, asking me if I'd "given up" on the debt. I said no, that when I find a job I'll be able to make payments on it again. He told me that was "giving up." I don't know about you all, but IF I were to ever "give up" on a debt, I would simply never pay it off, even if I did have the funds. I tried to tell this asshole that, but he kept insisting that I'd given up. I asked him where I was supposed to get the payment he was asking for- did he just want me to pull it out of thin air? He told me to hit up family and friends. WTH? I don't have rich friends, and my family has already refused to help me with school expenses, so why would I expect them to start helping now?

I only pray that I can get a job ASAP so I can pay off these asswipes and be done with them FOREVER. Any suggestions as to how I can get them off my back?

I worked as a customer service rep. at Wells Fargo Home Mortgage for about six months straight out of college. I believe I was the only college graduate in my "class." I say "class" because before CSRs are out on the floor taking customer calls they go through about three weeks of training.

Working at WFHM was a horrible experience. It got to the point where I would pray that I would get in a car accident over lunch so that I wouldn't have to go back to work.

99.9% of the calls I got were from frusterated homeowners (why else would they be calling?). Sometimes the homeowners were simply confused and needed someone to explain to them what was going on, other times they were pissed off at the company for good reason.

Unfortunately reps are ill-equiped to handle most issues. Training is limited and reps truely have no authority. Reps are evaluated on the number of calls they take per hour - not on how well they resolve the issue, mind you, but how quickly they get the caller off the phone. Homeowners would frequently request to talk to a supervisor but we were instructed to do whatever it took to avoid handing the call over to the supervisor. Little did they know, the "supervisors" are simply CSRs with more experience. Most true supervisors never take calls.

We were usually able to see which CSRs the customer talked to the last time they called in but we were not allowed to contact that rep - so basically there is no accountability.

Just FYI - payments are not processed by actual people, they are processed by machines so notes/instructions sent with payments are not read.

I don't know what the purpose of my post was. Basically I just hope that people remember that they are mad at Wells Fargo, not the human on the other end, and that they *try* not to yell or swear at the rep who is trying their best.
