I don’t know why people hate them. I find them very useful for exactly the reason you mentioned in your comment. Plus I get sidetracked by clicking hyperlinks too easily. I started using them for linking to images without ruining the flow of the text. The idea was that readers could just hover over a jpg link or what have you and see what I was referring to. Obviously there are too many wobbly handed, popup intolerant cretins out there on the internet.

The point is that you can see a representation of the site to see if you’ve been there before (i.e. Digg.com, Google.com, etc) If you haven’t seen it before, click the link. Is that so hard?

As suggested by the blog I linked from, these are useless and annoying. You can only see what the site looks like, but not what it actually says. What’s the point?
